Rangers picked up all three points in their latest league outing

Pundit Michael Stewart has challenged Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers to keep his impressive start to the new season going. The attacker has scored five goals in the opening six games, three of which have come in the league.

Dessers, who is 29-years-old, found the net on 22 occasions in the last campaign altogether. He will be eager to exceed that tally this time around as his side look to challenge Celtic for the title.

Rangers battered Ross County 6-0 over the weekend and now have seven points on the board. Dessers scored twice against the Staggies along with Rabbi Matondo, with Tom Lawrence and Danilo also getting themselves on the scoresheet.

Stewart has said on Sportscene: “You can’t argue against the fact that Cyriel Dessers scored a barrel of the goals last year. I think there’s a perception that there are a lot of chances that go begging at times. If he can get a better conversion rate then it would put a lot of the doubters’ minds at rest.

“He has started the season well and they’re going to have to keep doing that. The manager wanted to get new recruits in as early as possible ready for next week, whether that is going to happen or not time will tell. One thing for certain is Cyriel Dessers is going to shoulder a lot of the burden of trying to find the back of the net and if he can’t do that, Rangers are going to be in a bit of trouble at the top end of the park.”

Dessers is no stranger to missing chances here and there but if he can find consistency, Stewart believes he can prove people wrong at Rangers. Philippe Clement has until the deadline on Friday to bring in some more new faces to bolster his ranks.

The Gers face Celtic next in the Old Firm and will be in confident mood after seeing off Ross County with ease. They will also be satisfield by the fact they kept a clean sheet.

Dessers was hailed by Clement after the match and his boss said: “He deserves it, he is doing a very good job.  This is the best Cyriel that I have seen in his career until now and he is somebody who is hungry to play for his shirt and someone who is also hungry to learn to become better.

“He is not 20 years old anymore but he stays hungry to learn all the details and you see in several details he is becoming better and better by doing it and by watching the videos and to talk about it.”

He added: “What pleased me most? A lot of things because it is about all the details that we have been working on for weeks and months. You see a young talented team who get to know each other better and better and understand all the details better and better and then you get good results if the efficiency is there.

“It was there in moments; it could have also been more today but you see more and more the football we want to play and with a lot of movement without the ball and people being in the right positions.
