Competing on the same track used at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Motherwell AC’s Jim Smith won gold in the M70 100m (PB), 200m, 400m (PB) and he also claimed silver in the long jump.

Team-mate Fiona Steele took gold in the W50 100m in a personal best time, while William Martin landed first place in the M60 300m hurdles and scooped silvers in the 200m and 400m.

M35 athlete Alan Robertson won golds in the 200m and long jump and also claimed a 100m silver in a PB time.

Their Motherwell AC team-mates Clare Barr and Phyllis Hands (not pictured) won gold medals in the W50 800m and W55 3000m respectively.

Level three club coach Bob McCrum praised the athletes’ medal-winning exploits at such a prestigious championships and gave particular praise to latest recruit Fiona – a former women’s rugby player – whom the coach said had “fitted in so well”.

Bob added: “Fiona works extremely hard and enjoys the sessions. Like the men, she sets a great example to the club’s younger athletes like Stephen Ross.”

Pictured on the far right of the photograph, Stephen won a bronze medal in the U20 200m at the West District Championships in Kilmarnock.

“Stephen took that medal at 10pm on a cold and windy evening,” Bob said. “He just missed a PB on that night, but a few weeks later improved by half a second to 22.6 seconds.

“Stephen – along with a few other youngsters – have great potential and take lots of encouragement from the Masters.”

“As a coach, I feel very privileged and lucky to be involved with this super group of athletes.

“They enjoy the hard work, the fun and the banter.”
