Freshers Week is nearly upon us Glasgow - where thousands of students will descend upon the city, many for the first time, joining the massive community of Glaswegians across the city.
This week we spoke with Daniel Byron, the editor of Glasgow Caledonian University’s official magazine, The Edit, a fourth year journalism student who knows the lay of the land better than any other student at Caley.
Daniel spends his time writing and editing around Caledonian, from the best pubs for Glasgow Caley students to the worst student-traps across the city, it’s a great first port of call to find out what’s happening at the uni. You can check out their articles here!

5. The cheapest pub lunch in Glasgow
What better way to celebrate Freshers Week than a hearty pub lunch? For just £6.75 you can get a gastro-pub main which ranges from Gammon Steaks to posh paninis and flatbreads. Running from 12-5pm, it’s a great way to start any pub on Sauchiehall Street.
6. Places to avoid for students in Glasgow
Try and avoid student-traps in town, it’s easy to fall into the fallings of callers on the street, promising student deals and immaculate vibes. Speak to any older generations of Caley students and they’ll you they have sworn-off the Savoy after ‘experiences’ with some of the older crowd - although if that sounds like your type of scene, enter at your own peril.
7. Surviving student accommodation
Daniel Byron shared his tips for surviving your first year in student accommodation: ”Give everyone a chance, you’re not going to like every single person, but don’t judge a book by its cover. People can look weird but get to know them and they can be your best pals, You’re going to meet a massive mix of people from different backgrounds, so give them a chance - in my opinion sharing food is a great way to get to know people.”
8. Where to stay after student accommodation at Glasgow Caledonian
Looking for a new spot to stay? Or maybe student accommodation just isn’t your bag. Either way, there’s plenty of cheap spots to live outwith Caley’s campus. Dennistoun is a great spot to stay and is very much on the rise (i.e. in the process of gentrification) with plenty of great pubs and places to eat. Charing Cross at the bottom of Sauchiehall Street is another great location, with great access to both the city centre and the West End, should you wish to wander into the territory of Glasgow Uni students.
