Celtic hero targets free agent move for ex Rangers player, former Rangers boss in race to succeed Hoops gaffer

The latest Celtic and Rangers news ahead of their final games of 2025

Both Celtic and Rangers will play their final games of 2025 this evening when they take on St Mirren and Motherwell respectively in the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops have the chance to go level on points with Hearts if they win, as the league leaders do not return to action now until January 3rd. Meanwhile, Rangers will be looking to further close the gap on their Glasgow rivals as they head into the new year.

Former Rangers starlet eyed by Scott Brown

Rangers academy graduate Adam Devine is being targeted by Celtic icon Scott Brown as he looks to recruit for Ayr United once the January window opens. The former midfielder, who won ten Premiership titles with the Hoops, has made signing a new right wing-back a priority for the second half of the season.

Due to a long-term injury to Dylan Watret, Brown is eager to pad out the position and bring in new personnel, with Devine on his radar.

“It's an area we've made a priority to look at in January. Unfortunately Dylan will be out for a number of months which is a real blow for both him and the club,” Brown told the Ayrshire Post.

“We'd like to get a couple in during the window. It will be a case of people leaving first to allow others in so we'll see how things play out.”

Devine was previously backed to be a success at Rangers under former manager Michael Beale but he was released over the summer and remains without a contract. Ayr United will be able to sign him as a free agent at any point, should they opt to make a full pursuit.

Russell Martin in race to replace Wilfried Nancy at Columbus Crew

In what would be a stunning return to management following his dismissal from Rangers, Russell Martin has been linked with the vacant job at MLS side Columbus Crew. The club are on the market for their next permanent manager, following Wilfried Nancy’s recent move to Celtic.

According to talkSPORT, Martin is being considered to replace the departed Frenchman, whose time in charge of the Hoops is yet to win over the fans. Form has improved under Nancy but he has lost four of his opening six games with Celtic and pressure has started to mount on his shoulders early.

Martin endured a nightmare run during his spell at Ibrox, which ultimately led to his sacking after just 123 days in charge. This stint marked the shortest ever served by a permanent Rangers manager, putting him in the club’s history books for all the wrong reasons.

After being axed in October, Martin is now linked with a return to the dugout. Columbus Crew are considering appointing the 49-year-old ahead of the 2026 MLS season. If he was to take on the job, his first official match in charge would be against Portland Thorns on February 22nd.
