Premier League boss would 'jump at' Celtic chance as ex-West Ham ally convinced Parkhead door is still open

Former Manchester United and West Ham boss says there’s been a bit of a ‘lull’ in new contract talks at Everton

Everton boss David Moyes would ‘jump’ at the chance to work at Celtic, according to his former West Ham scout Mick Brown.

The veteran Scottish boss is out of contract at the Hill Dickinson in the summer - and claims while extensions talks are ongoing, they’ve hit a little bit of a ‘lull’ in recent weeks. Brown believes the former Celtic defender would be more than open to a move back to Glasgow if the opportunity arose.

Celtic boss Martin O’Neill is also set to leave the club in the summer. The 74-year old guided them to the domestic double last season - but things haven’t been quite as plain sailing in the current campaign. With the future of the Hoops gaffer also uncertain to a degree, Brown reckons Moyes could be an ideal successor.

Why would Moyes ‘jump’ at the chance to manage Celtic?

Former Manchester United and Aston Villa scout Brown has now retired but remains well-connected in the game. Speaking to Football Insider, he said of Moyes: "There's still a lot that has to happen before we can talk about David Moyes leaving Everton

"But if they can't reach an agreement about a new contract, then he will have to consider his options, and I think the Celtic job could be very appealing for him. He would jump at the chance to go back to Scotland, with the club he used to represent as a player, so it would make a lot of sense for all parties.

"From a Celtic point of view, it would be a major coup to land a manager like Moyes, and that's why I do have doubts about whether he will end up leaving Everton. But he's obviously got family up in Scotland, so that's always a possibility that he could be tempted to move back there, and as I said, the Celtic job will surely appeal to him."

What is Moyes’ current contract situation?

The 63-year old remains a popular amongst the blue half of Merseyside for his achievements over two spells. By 2027, he’ll have represented Everton for over 13 years all-in, although as it stands that could be the year he waves goodbye. Earlier this month, Moyes revealed contract talks are in motion - but have recently hit a standstill.

Speaking ahead of their Premiership encounter with Chelsea last week, he said: "There's been plenty of talks happening through the summer but maybe with the way things have gone at the moment, there's maybe been a bit of a lull, trying to get things in order. But like I've said many times, it's not the most important thing for me. I just want to keep trying to drive Everton on and build them up, and see if we can continue to improve."
