Rangers 'monitoring the situation' of star for cut-price January transfer deal as summer interest resurfaces

Ibrox side are expecting a quiet January but are still looking in the market for reinforcements

Rangers are reportedly ‘monitoring the situation’ of Djurgardens winger Oskar Fallenius, as their summer transfer interest in the Swede continues into the winter.

The Ibrox side have previously expressed interest in the 24-year old, who enjoyed a previous spell at Danish side Brondby. Fallenius - who has bagged two goals and three assists in the Allsvenskan so far this season - is out of contract in December, as Rangers seek to pounce for a cut-price deal.

Both Rangers manager Derek McInnes and Chairman Andrew Cavenagh have hinted that they expect a quiet January, as they don’t want to unsettle the current squad. However, it appears the Light Blues are still in the market for a bit more depth.

Rangers revisit summer transfer interest in Fallenius

According to TeamTalk: “Rangers are expecting a calm January transfer window under Derek McInnes, with both the manager and chairman Andrew Cavenagh signalling that significant business is not expected, though TEAMtalk can confirm one player under serious consideration.

“One name still circulating from sources is Swedish winger Oskar Fallenius of Djurgarden. The 24-year old was a summer target, and his contract expires at the end of December, raising the possibility of a free or cut-price switch to Ibrox. Sources indicate Rangers are monitoring the situation and may revisit interest, viewing him as a cost-effective option to add attacking depth without heavy outlay.”

Manager expects quiet January

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh said at a fan engagement meeting earlier this month that Rangers fans shouldn’t expect a squad influx in January. McInnes has subsequently echoed those thought and revealed he’s had meetings with Cavenagh and CEO Jim Gillespie. The manager claimed: “I think we can cope in terms of numbers. The conversations I’ve had with both Andrew and Jim [Gillespie] separately were a couple of weeks ago, after the Celtic game.

“We spoke about the need for January not to become an unsettling one for us. We spoke about the importance of keeping the squad together. We feel that, by the beginning of December, we could have the boys I’ve just mentioned back fit. That will feel like signing three new players, with Cammy, Daisuke and Lawrence bolstering the squad. What the chairman said reflects the conversation we’ve had. We don’t expect to be busy in January at all.”
