A chip shop in the city centre of Glasgow received controversial mixed reviews prior to its new refurbishment - which has since been praised by online reviewers on TripAdvisor.

Blue Lagoon could not ask for a better location than their shop on Gordon Street - attracting commuters to and from the station at all hours, you would imagine for it’s convenience that customers wouldn’t be too fussy, but their online reviews tell otherwise.

In fact you can’t leave Glasgow Central from the front or back without coming across a Blue Lagoon - with another shop open on Argyle Street under the Hielanman’s Umbrella at the lower level exit for the station.

The Gordon Street branch has two and a half stars on TripAdvisor- right down the middle - with ten terrible one star reviews, and five excellent reviews.

One user received 146 likes for his one star review titled ‘Disgusting food’, it read: ”I need my head examined going in here but tired and hungry on way home and paid nearly £10 for the most disgusting fish and chips ever. The chips soft and anemic. The fish is inedible with batter so soft that the fish just broke.

“This place should be closed down although the won’t care as the position outside Central Station is ideal for passing trade and drunk people. Not even worth one star. Avoid at all costs.”

Justin Bieber visited the shop after his sell-out gig at the SSE Hydro before paying a visit to Blue Lagoon in 2016 - he paid £20 for a haggis supper, a fish supper and two sausage suppers for himself and security staff. This led to the chippy running a ‘Justin Bieber special’ - a haggis supper - for a number of years

Another one star review, titled ‘BOWFIN’, that got 75 likes read: ”This is the worst chippy ive ever been in aimed at people who have had a few drinks and just want to eat and not make a fuss....

“Well be aware i have a steel stomach and was sick through the night that never happens to me so it must have been bad there is no way that was a haggis supper it was more like a floating hedgehog ...swimming in grease yuck never again !!”

The establishment also got three very good four-star reviews, two average three-star reviews, and three poor reviews.

Another reviewer reasonably wrote a three-star review, that read: ”Been in after working late and staff always seem pleasant and food is ok nothing special slightly overpriced I felt but at 3/4 am it’s difficult to find anywhere open.”

One reviewer left a four-star review praising the staff, receiving 60 likes, it read: ”Came here with my family for a late dinner after shopping the staff were absolutely fantastic I’ve never met a friendlier bunch! They asked about our day helped with the wheelchair asked how we all were and even spoke away to the kids!

“The food was lovely and the restaurant was extremely quirky and clean! I’d definitely come back the staff definitely made that chippy I wish everyone had there fantastic attitude!”

The restaurant recently re-opened after a major refurbishment saw the restaurant extend into the adjacent property to allow new seating - and a massive boat decoration.

Someone else left a five-star review of the takeaway, writing: ”These guys have really upped their game. What used to be a local take away chippy has had a massive makeover, awesome restaurant and re fit has certainly changed the whole feel of this place for the better.

“And has a very professional feel to it. Still as busy as ever but major improvement in terms of food quality, customer service and speed! Well done blue lagoon! Will definitely be back regularly.”
